The Devil’s Disciple
Production Date: May 1998
Directed by: Tony Butterfield
The first full-length play by the newly-formed Wychwood Players; the Centenary of the first British production of the "Devil's Disciple"; and a new Village Hall.
This is one of the most accessible of Shaw's large drama output - a classic melodrama with a well focussed look at an anti-hero. Dick Dudgeon's actions are a step ahead of another anti-hero, the fascinating General Burgoyne, who enlivens the last act with his anti-establishment attitudes.
Burgoyne is a reality and within a month of these fictional events he has superintended the loss of our largest colony. It is interesting to think what might have happened if he had won! Back to the G7!
