An Inspector Calls
Production Date: March 2007
Directed by: Philip Brown
The play was written in 1945 to encapsulate the spirit of the time during the final period of the 2" World War, in which visions of social responsibility were undergoing a huge sea change in Britain. The play itself is set in 1912 on the eve of the 1% World War, again during a period of pivotal change in our history. | have, as with the National Theatre’s 1992 revival of the play, set the production across these two time zones. | feel that even today, current world events place us once more in a moment in which, as in the play, we cannot afford to be complacent in the face of uncomprehending external forces which threaten our own existence.
